At these prices the cost of using a protective geotextile underlay as a barrier against stones, roots, shale, wildlife, etc is incredibly cheap compared to the cost, time and effort of having to drain, uplift paving or liner in order to carry out repairs to a hole in a liner where an alternative material has failed.

Remember, every few years you may have to enter the pond to  carry out maintenance  i.e clean debri or clear overgrown plants - a long lasting protective barrier is therefore essential as it helps “cushion” ones body weight against the possibility of a stone to be pushed through the liner, from beneath.

All our pond liners carry the appropriate guarantee against any latent manufacturing defects, IRRESPECTIVE of what protective underlay you decide to use i.e underlay, geotextile or carpet etc.

Carpet or carpet underlay is widely used as a cheap or free alternative to underlay, whilst these materials offer good protection, it is sometimes is only be short term solution as ground-damp could rot most carpets leaving the liner exposed to sharp stones and other abrasive materials.Additionally they are not designed to curb root damage etc.

Sand is also widely used as a protective barrier, although do not offer any protection against root damage.Kindly ensure that the layer of sand is fairly thick, as the ground will “absorb” some sand over time - also we would recommend an alternative protective material be applied on banks as sand tends to dry out and gather at the bottom of the pond leaving the liner exposed.

FLP Erocell Ground & Slope Reinforcement & Erosion Control

Steep slopes, river banks, ditches, spillways and other exposed areas are often prone to damage caused by erosion due to wind or water. FLP Erocell can help to prevent erosion by confining soils and aggregates to within the cell structure.Varying degrees of protection can be afforded by selecting alternative in-fill materials. Seeded topsoil provides protection for less exposed areas. Protection may be increased by introducing vegetation such as small shrubs. For greater protection, a granular in-fill can be used in certain circumstances. Appropiate in-fills can also be chosen to give a desired surface appearance. The standard FLP Cellular System for erosion protection, FLP Erocell, is normally suitable for use on slopes with an incline of up to 45 degrees (1:1 slopes). If the slope angle is greater than 45 degrees, additional considerations need to be given to the design of the cellular system and the standard FLP EROCELL may not be suitable. In these instances please contact us for further assessment. TYPE Incl. Each site is unique and particular precautions for ensuring a successful installation may differ from site to site. When planning installation, attention should be given to ensuring that all equipment and tools required for installation are available. In addition, sufficient personnel (with the necessary skills) should be employed on the installation work. Adequate precautions should also be taken to ensure the safety of personnel. Some of the other matters to consider when planning installation include:• Desired shapes and sizes of the cells• Methods for compacting the slope surface (during surface preparation)• Methods for fixing FLP EROCELL to the installation surface• Anchoring details, to prevent excessive down-slope movement of FLP EROCELL• Methods for filling the cells• Methods for compacting the in-fill material into the cells, if required. This list is by no means exhaustive and the designer should include all other necessary considerations. If planned correctly, the installation of FLP EROCELL should be a trouble-free experience.(b) Site Preparation Geocells perform better when installed on even,well-prepared surfaces. Prior to installing FLP EROCELL, it is advised that the slope surface is made level and even. Any sharp objects and stones that are much larger than (or significantly different in shape and angularity from) the intended fill material (i.e material to be placed in the cells) should be removed. If necessary, to achieve a level surface, compaction of the slope surface should be undertaken. If required, a suitable geotextile may be used as a separator between the geocell and the slope surface.

The Big Pond Dip 2009

Flexible Lining Products Ltd are proud to become a founding member and supporter of The Big Pond Dip 2009 run by Pond Conservation the national charity dedicated to creating and protecting ponds and the wildlife they support

Everyone knows that one of the best things you can do for wildlife in the garden is to put in a pond. But amazingly nobody really knows what you need to do to make a great wildlife garden pond. What’s the best size and depth? How important is really clean water? What should the edges be like? Is there enough shallow water? There are lots of myths about making ponds in garden - now we want to try to get to the real truth. By taking part in the Big Pond Dip, you are helping Pond Conservation to find out what is living in garden and school ponds, to start answering some of these questions. The information you gather will tell us how good garden ponds are for wildlife. It will also help us to tell what types of pond support the most animal life. We will use this information to give advice about how to make garden ponds even better for wildlife
